Chicago Blackhawks Trade Away Veteran Forward to Cup Contender

March 5, 2026 by Last Word On Hockey

The Chicago Blackhawks have sent veteran centre Jason Dickinson and youngster Colton Dach to the Edmonton Oilers . In return, the Hawks have acquired forward Andrew Mangiapane and a 2027 conditional first-round draft pick. The Hawks are also said to be retaining 50% of Dickinson’s contract, taking the total to $2.125 million.

As a pending unrestricted free agent, Dickinson has earned a chance to participate in the postseason before hitting the open market on July 1st. Dickinson’s strong play throughout his tenure with the Blackhawks made him an attractive piece.

Dickinson Dealt to Edmonton

The Blackhawks acquired Dickinson in October 2022 from the Vancouver Canucks . In that time, he has had the most productive seasons of his career in the Windy City. In 266 games with the Hawks, Dickinson has chipped in 44 goals and 50 assists, including a 22-goal, 35-point campaign in 2023-24. He is also effective in the faceoff circle, hovering around 50 percent at the dot in each season in Chicago. This year, he has six goals and seven assists, while playing just over 15 minutes per game.

However, the veteran is mostly known for his two-way prowess. He played on the Hawks’ top penalty kill unit alongside Ilya Mikheyev , a group that kills penalties at above 85 percent, tops in the league. No kidding. Dickinson is a low-maintenance player and can slot into any contending team’s bottom six and penalty kill. He will be a nice pickup for the Oilers.

Blackhawks Shifting Further Into Youth Movement

This move clearly continues the Blackhawks’ trend of getting their younger assets more time in the NHL. As mentioned, Dickinson will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, and clearly, the Hawks did not view him as a part of their future. With other veteran forwards like Nick Foligno and Ryan Donato , the Oilers swooped in to acquire Dickinson’s services. Look for the Hawks’ youngsters to continue earning key minutes for head coach Jeff Blashill.

This trade shows that general manager Stan Bowman and the Oilers are all in for this season, despite their recent struggles. Moving from Mangiapane was definitely a key move. For the Hawks, expect a flurry of moves to come in during the deadline.
