A Tribute to Sam Rosen: It’s a Power Play Goal!

April 20, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

Thursday night was more than just the end of the regular season for the New York Rangers. It was a tribute to legendary announcer Sam Rosen. His voice has been the sound of Rangers hockey for the past 40 years, passing through generations of fans. After a fitting 4- 0 shutout win over the Tampa Bay Lightning , the night served as a celebration of a career that has defined what it means to experience Rangers hockey.

His Legacy Will Last a Lifetime

For decades, Rosen has guided fans through the highs and lows of Rangers history with his unmistakable passion and presence. His words elevated every big moment, from thrilling overtime winners to Stanley Cup triumphs. His signature phrases, “It’s a power play goal,” “The Garden is on their feet,” and “This one will last a lifetime,” have become part of Rangers tradition, echoing in the memories of fans across generations.

To commemorate the end of his legendary broadcasting career, the Rangers turned the season finale into a heartfelt tribute. Every Rangers player took the ice for warmups wearing a custom jersey with the number 40 and Rosen’s name on the back, symbolizing his four decades of service. The jersey featured the number 40 in honor of Sam Rosen’s 40 years, with his name “Rosen” displayed prominently. On the front, there was also a special patch featuring one of his most iconic calls, “It’s a power play goal.”

Even his longtime broadcast partner, Joe Micheletti, wore the special tribute sweater.

A Heartfelt Tribute on a Historic Night

Throughout the night, the tributes continued. He was named the first star of the game, a fitting recognition for the legendary announcer. Players on both benches tapped their sticks in a gesture of appreciation. Despite a disappointing season, the Rangers sealed the moment with a 4–0 win, a fitting sendoff for the voice behind so many historic calls. Earlier in the season, the Rangers had already honored Rosen during a special Sam Rosen Night on March 22. That evening featured a pregame ceremony and speeches, giving fans a chance to thank the man who had become a part of their hockey lives.

Beyond his iconic voice, Sam was known for his kindness and selflessness, displaying an unwavering passion for the game and for his fans. His genuine warmth and character earned him respect and admiration from everyone in the league. While the games will continue without him in the booth, Sam Rosen’s legacy is engraved into Rangers history. In true Sam Rosen fashion, his impact will last a lifetime.
