The 2025 NHL Lottery has concluded. We know who will be picking first overall. It is not the San Jose Sharks or Chicago Blackhawks. It is not even the Pittsburgh Penguins. In a shocking turn of events, the New York Islanders have won the lottery and will draft first overall.

Who the Islanders will choose is unclear at this time. The consensus around the league is that defenceman Matthew Schaefer will go first overall, but there are other players who would be worthy of the first pick.
The Islanders victory in the lottery is an unexpected one. The Sharks, who picked first overall last year , had the best odds, but alas, the hockey gods were smiling on the Islanders. The Islanders were expected to draft tenth overall.
