Warriors Make First Post Jimmy Butler Trade Decision

February 6, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Golden State Warriors rookie Quinten Post and veteran Draymond Green fired up

The Golden State Warriors have made their splash trade , bringing Jimmy Butler to the Bay and moving Andrew Wiggins to the Miami Heat. Notably, five other players —Kyle Anderson , Dennis Schroder , Lindy Waters III , Josh Richardson , and PJ Tucker –were involved in the multi-team deal , which was expanded to include the Utah Jazz and Detroit Pistons. Butler, however, is the only player expected to land with the Warriors.

Warriors Set To Sign Quentin Post Following Jimmy Butler Trade

As Golden State will open up three roster spots with the trade, they’ll be under the 14-player roster minimum.

Thus, HoopsHype insider Michael Scotto’s report that the Warriors are expected to convert Quinten Post ‘s contract from a two-way contract to a standard one should come as no surprise. It doesn’t hurt that the rookie center has been a revelation since breaking into the team’s rotation. Known primary for his ability to stretch the floor, he was shooting 37.5 percent from three-point range heading into Wednesday’s game against the Utah Jazz.

The Warriors still need to fill three more roster spots, so multiple free agents will likely be signed. Because of the shooting that they lost by swapping Wiggins for Butler, strong outside shooters will probably get primary consideration from Golden State. With that in mind, there are a few intriguing players that could hit the buyout market.

Free Agent Options

It’s not yet known whether they’re prepared to leave their current teams by way of a buyout agreement. However, Washington Wizards combo guard Malcolm Brogdon could play the role that they hoped Schroder would conform to. A career 38.8 percent three-point shooter, Brogdon won Sixth Man of the Year in 2023. Brooklyn Nets forward Bojan Bogdanovic ‘s defense will always be a concern but he’s elite from three-point range. A career 39.4 percent shooter, Bogdanovic has yet to play this season.

Alternative options like Torrey Craig , Isaiah Thomas , Lonnie Walker IV , and Bryce Cotton could be considered as well. In fact, Craig may have multiple contenders lined up for his services. Though a defensive-minded veteran, he’s improved tremendously off-ball over the past three seasons, shooting 39.7 percent from three.

Walker is far closer to the prime of his career than Thomas but not as skilled. Both have shown potential suitors that they can step up in important moments. Unlike Thomas and Walker, Cotton doesn’t have a memorable NBA playoff performance. Nonetheless, he’s been one of the best guards in the NBL for years. The way he was playing in Australia earlier this year was ringing bells all the way in America.
