Victory Wembanyama Takes Another Shot At Chet Holmgren

December 24, 2025 by Heavy

The budding rivalry between Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren continues to show no love between the two rising stars. Both players are considered young stars that have the potential to win multiple Defensive Player of the Year Awards. Wembanyama has made some critical comments throwing shade at Holmgren over the past two seasons and is not stopping any time soon.

The San Antonio Spurs scored a second big victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder last night ahead of another high-profile matchup coming on Christmas day. Wemby said the following to the media once asked if he considers the Chet matchup a rivalry:

“No, I don’t think about that. At least from a basketball standpoint, there’s no comparison between us.”

Even though Wembanyama didn’t say anything more to insult Holmgren personally, the tone and overall comment revealed the whole story. Wembanyama doesn’t view Holmgren on his level as a superstar in the NBA. Chet’s greatest argument in this debate comes from the Oklahoma City team’s success, but it’s nearly impossible to argue him as a better player than Wemby.

Why Does Victor Wembanyama Dislike Chet?

Previous moments from Wembanyama make it clear that he doesn’t have much love for Holmgren on the basketball court. NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki even had a little criticism towards Wembanyama for implying that Holmgren’s success comes from having MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander doing the real work of leading the Thunder to dominant wins.

The two often are matched up in games and are compared as two of the top young centers in the league. Wembanyama is fair that he has to do a lot more each night and is tasked with leading his franchise to greatness. Holmgren is at best the second option in Oklahoma City and often gets placed third behind All-Star Jalen Williams .

Wembanyama just views himself on a different tier than Holmgren and isn’t wrong for that. The Spurs expect him to become a top ten all-time player based on his talent level and shocking skill set. No player has ever felt as immediately dominant as Wemby does to put him on another level from every other young star.

Victor Wembanyama Vs Holmgren On Christmas

The NBA lucked out by the Spurs beating the Thunder for a second consecutive time last night. San Antonio’s previous NBA Cup semi-finals victory over Oklahoma City was a big moment that made the rematch highly anticipated. The Thunder’s dominance this season added excitement to see them facing off against a top that eliminated them from the NBA Cup.

An Oklahoma City win last night would have removed the intrigue and made the Christmas game less exciting. The Spurs beating the top seed yet again adds even more drama to see if Wembanyama can lead them to a third straight win over the historically great Thunder squad.

There is no question that Wembanyama loves to outplay Holmgren and beat Oklahoma City. Christmas is the biggest regular season day of the year for the NBA, so this game holds extra importance. Chet and Wembanyama facing off could see one of the two bragging for the next victory in their rivalry.
