Tobias Harris Plays Key Leadership Role In Pistons Growth

February 14, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Detroit Pistons forward Tobias Harris (12) reacts in the second half against the Atlanta Hawks at Little Caesars Arena.

When the Detroit Pistons signed Tobias Harris last summer, the move sparked debate. Some saw Harris as a much-needed scoring presence at power forward. Others questioned whether he could deliver in critical moments or if he was just a player who put up numbers without elevating his team. Regardless of which side you were on, one thing is clear now: Harris has significantly impacted this young team.

Statistically, Harris’ stats have taken a slight dip. His scoring, rebounding, assists, and shooting percentages are down. However, his value goes beyond the numbers. He’s been a steady presence, playing in 53 of the team’s 55 games while embracing his leadership role. Harris’ mentorship of emerging talents like Ron Holland and Ausar Thompson has been crucial in their development.

The Pistons are 29-26 heading into the All-Star break, and Harris is a key contributor to their success. His impact often goes beyond the box score. When the game gets chaotic, his steady leadership and calming presence stand out the most. In his 14th NBA season, Harris knows how to weather storms and keep his team composed.

Take the January 3rd matchup against the Charlotte Hornets, for example. During the game, Holland drove hard to the basket but didn’t get the call he expected. Frustrated, He began arguing with the referees, risking a technical foul. Harris calmly pulled him aside and offered a few words of advice. That brief moment of leadership helped refocus Holland and the team, ultimately leading the Pistons to a hard-fought 98-94 victory.

For a young Detroit squad prone to playing stretches of near-flawless basketball—only to get complacent and let opponents back into games—Harris has been the stabilizing force they need. When the game hangs in the balance, it’s often the 32-year-old who steps up with a timely bucket or a key defensive stop. His ability to settle things down at critical moments has been the difference in several close wins this season.

Harris’s Impact On Winning For The Pistons

When Harris is on the floor , the Pistons have an offensive rating of 117.0 compared to 109.4 when he’s off—a clear sign of his influence on the team’s offensive flow. Defensively, opponents post an offensive rating of 112.9 with him on the court versus 115.0 when he’s not. The numbers might not jump off the page, but they reflect Harris’s steady veteran presence on both ends of the floor.

And let’s not forget that Harris can still score when the team needs him to. Over his last nine games , he’s averaged 17.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 1.0 blocks while shooting an impressive 53.7% from the field. While his three-point shooting has struggled at just 20.7% during this stretch, Harris has remained reliable at the foul line, converting 89.3% of his free throws. Most importantly, during this span, the Pistons have gone 6-3, a testament to how his all-around contributions translate to wins.

The Last Word

Harris may not be the flashiest player, but his impact on the Pistons has been undeniable. His steady leadership and timely scoring have made him the glue holding this young squad together. Harris is the calming presence they rely on when the game gets chaotic.

His influence goes beyond the box score. He helps develop the next generation of Pistons while still delivering when called upon. Harris’s leadership will remain a key factor as the Pistons push for a playoff spot. Detroit’s postseason hopes will stay alive if he continues in his current form. Harris’s leadership could be the difference between a rebuild and a breakthrough for a team still searching for its identity.
