Report: San Francisco Giants Still Pursuing Blockbuster Trade

January 17, 2026 by Heavy

Buster Posey and the San Francisco Giants have yet to make a splash move this offseason. For a team that wants to get back to being a World Series contender, that isn’t a recipe to find the success they want.

Despite the lack of aggressiveness so far this offseason, there is still time for the Giants to get something done.

With that being said, a new update has been shared about San Francisco. The team is still interested in making a blockbuster trade for starting pitching.

According to Jon Heyman of The Athletic, the Giants are still among the teams actively discussing a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers for star pitcher Freddy Peralta.

In addition to San Francisco, Heyman named the New York Yankees , New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Atlanta Braves as other teams interested in Peralta.

“Brewers continue to field offers on ace pitcher Freddy Peralta, a free agent after 2026. Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Giants and Braves among many, many interested teams,” Heyman wrote on X . “Peralta $8M salary means anyone can afford, including Brewers, but extension tougher for small markets.”

San Francisco Giants Trading for Freddy Peralta Would Be Ideal

Peralta is exactly what the Giants need this offseason. They have a clear need for starting pitching and it doesn’t get much better than Peralta.

Last season with the Brewers, the 29-year-old star pitcher made 33 starts. He compiled a 17-6 record to go along with a 2.70 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, a 3.1 K/BB ratio, and 176.2 innings pitched. Adding those numbers to the San Francisco rotation would look much better.

As of right now, FanGraphs is projecting the Giants’ rotation to be Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, Tyler Mahle, Adrian Houser, and Landen Roupp. That isn’t going to cut it.

San Francisco needs to bring in a clear-cut ace. Making the blockbuster trade for Peralta would be exactly the kind of move the team needs.

It’s Time for the Giants to Get Back on Track

During the 2025 MLB season, San Francisco showed flashes of being a playoff caliber team. At the end of the day, the Giants finished with an 81-81 record, which was good enough for third place in the National League West division.

Posey has his work cut out for him. Getting San Francisco back to being a legitimate contender will be no easy task.

While acquiring Peralta from Milwaukee would not be a a one-move fix, the Giants need to start acting serious. Bringing in an ace for the rotation would be the first big step in the right direction.

It will be interesting to see who ends up landing Peralta. Seeing the Dodgers on the list would be nightmare fuel for the rest of Major League Baseball. After signing superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker, the addition of Peralta would be yet another blow to the rest of the league having a chance of denying Los Angeles a three-peat.

Expect to hear more about Peralta in the near future. At least for right now, San Francisco is a player to keep an eye on in trade discussions.
