Entering the MLB offseason, the Toronto Blue Jays needed to make a decision about their future with star shortstop Bo Bichette.
Bichette put together a strong 2025 campaign. For most of the offseason, the hope for the Blue Jays was that they would be able to re-sign him. However, that seems to have changed.
During the 2025 campaign, Bichette hit 18 home runs, drove in 94 RBI, and slashed .311/.357/.483 in 139 games.
According to a report from MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Toronto seems to have made a final decision on Bichette. He reported that the Blue Jays want superstar free agent outfielder Kyle Tucker and have already seemed to make their choice that he’s their guy.
“I think they’ve already made their choice. They want Tucker,” Nightengale said.
Nightengale also revealed that the only way Bichette would re-sign with Toronto would be if the Blue Jays miss out on Tucker.
There is still a possibility that Toronto could swing and miss on Tucker, but the recent reports have suggested that the Blue Jays are the front-runner to sign him.
What’s Next for Bo Bichette If He Leaves the Toronto Blue Jays?
Bichette has had an interesting market this offseason. The movement on him has been slow, but there are handful of teams who are interested.
Most notably, the Philadelphia Phillies have emerged as a front-runner for him. The two sides have had clear mutual interest and it would not be surprising to see a deal get done in the near future.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post recently reported that there is “momentum to get a deal done” between Bichette and the Phillies.
Other teams who have been connected to Bichette included the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. The Los Angeles Dodgers have also been talked about as a potential contender to sign him.
It’s important to note that the Red Sox agreed to a deal with free agent starting pitcher Ranger Suarez on Wednesday. That move could take them out of the running for Bichette.
Blue Jays Would Be Making the Right Choice to Sign Tucker Over Bichette
At the end of the day, Tucker is the better player. He is one of the best pure hitters in baseball and would boost Toronto’s World Series chances much more than the team re-signing Bichette.
Last season with the Chicago Cubs , Tucker dealt with some injury problems and had a down year. He played in 136 games and hit 22 home runs to go along with 73 RBI and a slash line of .266/.377/.464.
When healthy, those numbers would look much different.
Should the Blue Jays miss out on Tucker, which is possible due to the Dodgers and New York Mets both having high levels of interest in him, circling back around to Bichette would be wise. However, the team is making the right decision by prioritizing Tucker.
Only time will tell whether or not Toronto is able to get a deal done with Tucker. For now, it’s clear that the Blue Jays have made the decision that they would rather have the star outfielder than Bichette.
