With Joel Embiid absent for about half of last season, the Philadelphia 76ers often called on Paul Reed to take his place with the starters. All in all, the 25-year-old started 24 games last season and remained in the rotation in their first round series loss to the New York Knicks . In the offseason though, the 76ers waived Reed.
The Detroit Pistons ended up claiming Reed off waivers shortly after. While his contract had two years and $15.7 million left, both years were non-guaranteed. Detroit has decided to move on from 6-foot-9 center as he was waived from the team on Saturday.

Paul Reed Waived By Detroit On Saturday
The Pistons have played 26 games and own a 10-16 record. That is a large improvement over last season’s distaster where they finished an atrocious 14-68.
Over the first 26 outings, Reed appeared in 12 of them. Playing 10.4 minutes per contest, Reed posted averages of 4.8 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 0.7 assists. Reed shot 21-39 (53.8%) from the field, 4-11 (36.4%) from beyond the arc, and 12-15 (80.0%) from the foul line. He reached double figures in scoring once with the team on November 6, when he scored 13 points against the Charlotte Hornets . Reed played 15 minutes in Detroit’s most recent game on Thursday against the Boston Celtics .
This is Reed’s fifth season in the NBA. He was selected in the second round with the 58th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft by the 76ers. Reed spent his first four seasons with Philadelphia. In the 2023 offseason, he was a restricted free agent, but the 76ers matched the offer sheet handed to him by the Utah Jazz.
Last season, Reed appeared in all 82 games for Philadelphia and received the most playing time of his career at 19.4 minutes per outing. He posted career-high averages across the board that year at 7.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.0 blocks.
