The Pistons will be in the playoffs for the first time since 2018-19 and will be looking to win their first playoff game since the 2008-09 season. Detroit is currently enjoying one of the most improbable seasons in NBA history, tripling their win total from last season and going from a league-worst record to a playoff berth.
They did all of this behind a shakeup in the front office and coaching ranks, smart veteran additions, and internal growth.
New president Trajan Langdon made the difficult but wise decision to move on from Monty Williams one year into a mammoth multi-year contract and replaced him with JB Bickerstaff, one of the front-runners for Coach of the Year.
The Pistons did not make wholesale changes to their roster and instead kept all of its youth in place. To better surround that talent, they added veteran shooters and scorers — Tobias Harris and Malik Beasley in free agency and Tim Hardaway Jr. in a trade.
The talent infusion and coaching have allowed Detroit’s stable of young players to blossom, including young star Cade Cunningham, who is enjoying his best season and made his first All-Star team. He is also in contention for being named to his first All-NBA team.
But other young players have thrived as well, including big man Jalen Duren and young wings Ausar Thompson and Ron Holland Jr. Jaden Ivey was enjoying the best season of his young career and looking more like a long-term piece in Detroit before suffering a leg fracture on Jan. 1.
The Pistons’ opponent still remains to be seen. If the season ended today, it would be the New York Knicks , who also happens to be the team’s opponent on Thursday night. There is also a chance the Pistons could face the Indiana Pacers, rekindling a rivalry from the Going to Work era.
