A controversial call cost the Detroit Pistons a chance of securing a rare victory Monday night.
Detroit dropped to 8-49 following a 113-111 loss to the New York Knicks. The Pistons led by one before a wild possession swung the game at Madison Square Garden.
After Jalen Brunson missed a three-point attempt, Josh Hart stripped Simone Fontecchio to give New York life. Ausar Thompson then stole a pass from Donte DiVincenzo with approximately 10 seconds remaining, but the Pistons rookie lost the ball after DiVincenzo dived into his lower body.
Brunson retrieved the loose ball and found Hart for a game-winning bucket. Pistons head coach Monty Williams was understandably livid after the game.
Williams asked, “Where’s the New York media now?” as he sat down for a post-game press conference that lasted a little over one minute. That was more than enough time for him to rip the missed call.
“The absolute worst call of the season,” Williams declared, via Bally Sports Detroit . “No call, and enough’s enough.
Williams doesn’t think this was the first ruling that’s hurt his team. He said the Pistons have sent the league clips of other questionable calls from games this season.
“We’re sick of hearing the same stuff over and again,” Williams continued. “We had a chance to win the game, and the guy dove into Ausar’s legs. And there was a no-call. That’s an abomination. You cannot miss that in an NBA game.
He called the play “Exhibit A” to what his team has faced all season.
“It’s ridiculous, and we’re tired of it. We just want a fair game called. Period. And I got nothing else to say. We want a fair game, and that was not fair. I’m done,” Williams said before promptly leaving the podium.
