The New York Jets won their second straight game in Week 10, but it came at a cost.
Wide receiver Garrett Wilson injured his knee during the team’s 27-20 victory over the Cleveland Browns. After the game, head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that Wilson re-injured the same knee that had cost him two games this season.
“Garrett just came back down on his knee. That was the same knee that he injured before,” Coach Glenn said.
Wilson Makes the Wrong Kind of History in Week 10
The Jets targeted Wilson three times against the Browns. However, he didn’t finish with a catch.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed on social media that it was the first time in Wilson’s NFL career that he had ever finished a game without a reception.
The former Ohio State product didn’t return to the game after he hurt his knee.
Wilson originally hurt his knee during the Week 6 loss to the Denver Broncos . The injury forced Wilson to miss Week 7 and Week 8. Gang Green had a bye in Week 9.
Wilson was a limited participant in practice with the knee issue on Wednesday and Thursday. However, on Friday, he was a full participant in practice and was cleared for the game.
Gang Green Creatively Gets It Done
The Jets found a way to found a way against Cleveland. For most of the day, the Jets’ offense struggled. They finished as a group with 169 total net yards as an offense. New York averaged a paltry 3.6 yards per play.
Despite all that, the Jets won the game. Their second straight victory of the season. How did that happen? Complementary football.
“Tough, hard-fought game,” Coach Glenn described. “I’ll tell you what our special teams really gave us a spark today. That’s what we need, and that’s what I talked about, playing complementary football, when all three phases can go out and play. Today was really supportive football again. Listen, our special teams did a hell of a job. So I give a lot of credit to coach [Chris] Banjo and coach [Kevin] O’Dea.”
Great Redemption Stories for the Jets
The Jets made team history in Week 10. For the first time in franchise history, the Jets had a kickoff return touchdown and a punt return touchdown in the same game.
Not only did it happen in the same game, but both return touchdowns happened in the first quarter.
With 6:21 remaining in the first quarter, former All-Pro return man Kene Nwangwu returned it 99 yards to the house to tie the game.
Less than a minute later in game time, wide receiver Isaiah Williams returned a Browns punt 74 yards to the house. That put the Jets up 14-7. The Jets ended up winning the game by a touchdown.
Nwangwu battled injuries throughout the season that cost him time. He proved that when healthy, he is one of the most dangerous return men in the league.
Williams was selected as the replacement for Xavier Gipson after his costly fumble in the season opener. Then Williams had his own issues. In Week 4 against the Miami Dolphins , he fumbled a kickoff and fair caught a ball at his own two-yard line. Williams was cut from the team, but returned a few days later.
Now, Williams has helped turn the Jets and his NFL career around. After the game, Williams revealed that it was the first return touchdown “of his life.”
