Last offseason, the Detroit Pistons were willing to give Monty Williams a $78.5 million contract just so he can be their head coach. And yet, after just one disappointing season, the franchise decided to cut ties with him .
It was reported on Wednesday morning that Williams has been fired. He had $65 million remaining on his deal with the Pistons.
According to ESPN, Pistons owner Tom Gores and vice chairman Arn Tellem wanted to dismiss Williams. Clearly, they got their wish.
After this move was announced, Jemele Hill went on social media to offer her thoughts on Detroit’s coaching change.
Hill, a Detroit native, believes the Pistons made the right move. She thinks it was pretty evident that Williams wasn’t the right fit for this young roster.
“My biggest concern with Monty Williams was that he initially said he needed time off and didn’t want to coach right away,” Hill wrote . “It felt like he accepted the Pistons job because it was too much money to turn down and not because he necessarily wanted to coach this team. I just never got the impression he was truly excited to be there. I get that the Pistons are a struggling franchise, but you need a guy who sees promise and something that no one else can see.”
The Pistons finished this season with an abysmal 14-68 record. They tied an NBA record for the longest regular-season losing streak (28 games).
It’ll be interesting to see who the Pistons hire to replace Williams.
