According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Detroit Pistons shooting guard Quentin Grimes has officially been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to complications from a knee injury. Charania also said Grimes will not need surgery.

Sources: Detroit Pistons guard Quentin Grimes will miss the rest of the season to rehab lingering muscle soreness related to knee injury suffered in January. No surgery required and bone bruise in knee has healed. Grimes will be eligible for an extension prior to next season.

Grimes began his career with the New York Knicks after the team acquired him during the 2021 NBA Draft from the Los Angeles Clippers. The guard spent parts of three seasons with the Knicks before they traded him to the Pistons in February.

Former NBA First-Round Pick Officially Out for Rest of Season

Quentin Grimes This Season

Entering the 2023-24 NBA season, Grimes was in the Knicks’ starting lineup. However, a little over a month into the season, he moved to the bench in favor of Donte DiVincenzo . Ultimately, Grimes played 45 games for the Knicks this season and started 18 of them. In his time played with New York this season, Grimes averaged 7.3 points, 2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. Furthermore, he shot 39.5% from the field and 36.3% from the three-point line. The true story of Grimes’ game is his exceptional defense, however. As one of the toughest and peskiest defenders in the league, Grimes is aware of his reputation in the NBA. Last year, Grimes spoke more about his reputation and playing up to it :

“I feel like I’m kinda getting a reputation as one of the best defenders in the league, especially at the guard position,” said Grimes. “So I try to take it upon myself to make it as hard as I can and try to shut the other team’s best player down.”

Ahead of the 2024 NBA Trade Deadline, the Knicks traded Grimes to Detroit in a package for Alec Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic . Unfortunately for the 23-year-old, his Pistons tenure has been uneventful so far. In six games played with the team, Grimes averaged 5.3 points, 2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. Additionally, he shot a career-worst 21.4% from the field and 1.43% from beyond the arc. Despite a slow start, Pistons head coach Monty Williams still liked a lot of what he saw from Grimes in his short stint so far:

Troy & I talked about it this morning. If you only looked at the shooting, you would be a bit disheartened, but if you look at his game as a whole, I thought he was solid. Defensively, he was pretty good. Getting over screens & guarding the ball, playing in .5.

The Last Word on Quentin Grimes’ Injury

Grimes is a very solid player and can become a mainstay in Detroit’s rotation. Injuries got the best of him this season, but there is reason to believe he can recover and come back better than before. On paper, he is a great fit for Detroit, and the Pistons organization seems to enjoy having him on the roster as well. He is eligible for a contract extension before next season. It will be interesting to see if anything comes to fruition for the Texas native.
