Forgotten European 25.6 PPG Star Lifts Pistons Onto Exclusive List

October 7, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

DETROIT — Lauri Markkanen has become an afterthought in league discussions after signing a five-year, $238 million max extension. Two years of irrelevant basketball can erode memories of even the most athletic feats. Yet, this is the perfect time for the Pistons to land Lauri Markkanen.

Markkanen, 28, is entering his prime but finds himself far from contention in Utah. The Jazz just finished a 17-65 season, landing the 5th pick in June’s draft to select prodigious Ace Bailey. While some interpreted Austin Ainge’s comments as signs the Jazz could be competitive soon, his full remarks hinted otherwise.

“You won’t see that this year,” Ainge said when asked if the Jazz would prioritize losing to improve lottery odds. But he also admitted, “It’ll just depend on how these guys develop and what other moves we make, right?” His honesty reflects a team still in transition, not a win-now mindset.

Utah’s offseason supports that theory. They drafted two first-rounders, waived Jordan Clarkson , and traded John Collins . Those aren’t moves made by a playoff-ready team.

Markkanen, now an eight-year veteran, cannot afford more wasted seasons. He has never made the playoffs—a fact that will likely remain unchanged in Utah for the foreseeable future. A trade could revive his career and place him where he belongs: competing for meaningful basketball in April.

Detroit’s Rapid Rise Sets the Stage

The Lauri Markkanen and Pistons connection makes perfect basketball and financial sense. Detroit’s turnaround last season was nothing short of remarkable. After a franchise-worst 68-loss campaign in 2023–24, the Pistons surged into the playoffs as the sixth seed—a 30-win improvement.

They fell to the Knicks in six competitive games, but the series could have swung their way with better injury luck. The front office responded with subtle yet smart roster moves. Despite losing Dennis Schroder and Tim Hardaway Jr. in free agency, Detroit replaced them with Caris LeVert and Duncan Robinson .

Malik Beasley , one of the league’s most efficient shooters, is also expected to return despite a federal investigation that derailed his free agency. Adding Markkanen to that mix transforms Detroit from an upstart playoff team into a legitimate Eastern Conference contender.

To make the deal work, the Pistons could package Robinson and veteran Tobias Harris to match salaries, adding draft capital to seal it. The result would catapult the franchise into an elite class of teams competing for the East’s upper tier.

The Perfect Fit Beside Cade Cunningham

Markkanen’s skill set is tailor-made for Detroit’s cornerstone, Cade Cunningham . The Finnish forward averaged 25.6 points and 8.6 rebounds in his 2022–23 All-Star season on elite 49.9/39.1/87.5 shooting splits. His combination of size, shooting, and athleticism fits seamlessly next to Cunningham’s playmaking brilliance.

A Markkanen and Cunningham duo could become one of the NBA’s most dynamic pick-and-roll pairings. Markkanen’s ability as a lob threat and movement shooter would open up new offensive layers for Detroit.

The former Most Improved Player flashed star potential again this summer. During EuroBasket, he carried Finland to its first-ever semifinal appearance, showing he can elevate his play in competitive environments.

His arrival would not only boost Detroit’s playoff ceiling but also accelerate the development of young players like Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson . Markkanen’s spacing and versatility could unlock their games in ways few veterans can.

A Move That Changes Everything

A Lauri Markkanen trade would redefine Detroit’s trajectory. It would move them from promising to powerful, from rebuilding to respected. For Markkanen, it offers a chance to finally play consequential basketball. For the Pistons, it represents the next logical step toward sustained success.

This partnership feels inevitable. It’s the kind of union that shifts perception—from forgotten star to franchise savior, from playoff hopeful to serious contender. Detroit’s foundation is set. Markkanen might just be the missing piece.
