Everyone’s Saying Same Thing About Chris Webber Tonight

September 11, 2024 by The Spun

Chris Webber made five All-NBA teams during his Hall of Fame career, but people still remember his one mistake from college.

Near the end of Wednesday night’s game against the Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons rookie Jaden Ivey called a timeout on an inbound pass. Unfortunately, the Pistons had no timeouts remaining.

Basketball fans flocked to Twitter to recall Webber making the same error 30 years ago during Michigan’s national championship loss to North Carolina. Ivey even made the same miscue on Webber’s 50th birthday.

Unfortunately for him Detroit had no timeouts left…

Unrelated – today happens to be Chris Webber’s 50th birthday.

Detroit is assessed a technical foul, and Chicago converts to take a 115-112 lead.

Bulls also get the ball.

On April 5, 1993, Webber signaled for a timeout after grabbing a rebound. The costly error gave UNC two free throws and possession, costing Michigan any chance of winning the title.

Detroit also trailed by two points when Ivey asked for a timeout his team didn’t have. Zach LaVine made a free throw on the ensuing technical foul, and the Bulls earned a 117-115 victory at Little Caesars Arena.

Luckily for Ivey, his brain freeze didn’t happen in a championship clash. If anything, the loss could help the 15-48 Pistons stay near the bottom of the NBA standings and improve their draft lottery odds.
