The Memphis Grizzlies are reportedly ready to trade Ja Morant for the right offer at the trade deadline this season. Morant has accomplished a lot for Memphis, but both sides seem ready to make a move for their respective futures. Opposing teams like the Minnesota Timberwolves and Sacramento Kings have been actively interested in point guards on the market to make them strong options.
However, The Athletic’s John Hollinger reported that one “dark horse” team is reportedly interested in making an offer for Morant:
“Finally, let’s talk about one deep dark horse: Brooklyn. With one trusted league source telling me that Michael Porter Jr. is a lock to move by the deadline so the Nets can sell high on his career year, it makes sense for the Nets to figure out who will be the centerpiece of their franchise a year from now.
Dealing Porter for Morant and picks would allow the Nets to have their cake and eat it, too. They could sell high on Porter, buy low on Morant, and fill their most glaring roster weakness ahead of the 2026-27 season.”
The Brooklyn Nets will be looking for a new face of the franchise for next season’s playoff hopes. Point guard is their biggest weakness, and Morant stands out as a promising target if they can find the right deal.
Would Ja Morant Enjoy Joining Nets?
Morant has shown some unhappiness with the Grizzlies since the early weeks of the season. Clashing with the Grizzlies coaching staff saw Morant getting suspended after criticizing the coach’s decisions. Morant has looked better in his most recent games, but injury woes continue to tarnish his season.
Rumored frustrations growing larger made it clear that Morant’s time in Memphis may be coming to an end within the next year or two. The most recent report about the Grizzlies being the ones entertaining offers shows the time has come if a viable offer is out there.
Morant’s negative comments about the current situation in Memphis would see him quite happy to start off fresh anywhere else. Brooklyn is a great spot for him to run the offense with a young team and play in a much larger market to boost his name value back up after a few rocky seasons.
Nets Trade Packages For Ja Morant
The report about the Nets being a dark horse team for Morant initially names Michael Porter as a popular name on the market. Porter has played at an All-Star level and could be a great temptation for Memphis to add a talented wing player.
However, Brooklyn could easily opt to trade Porter to an aging team like the Golden State Warriors and Milwaukee Bucks with valued draft picks for the early 2030s available. Nets matching salaries is not an issue since they have many tradeable contracts, but the draft compensation is the question.
Brooklyn owns multiple first round draft picks of various teams, but they don’t have control over their own picks beyond this year. Memphis would have to be content with either going for Porter or lesser players and future picks. The Nets having five rookies on the roster makes that another enticing factor.
