The Golden State Warriors have learned that Draymond Green can’t be censored and will share his thoughts whenever he has a bold opinion. However, Green becoming a podcaster while active means that he shares his thoughts on other NBA teams as part of his side job. Prior comments this season saw Green stating there are five NBA Championship contenders.
The most recent episode of the Draymond Green Show saw him lowering that total to just three:
“I still think the Nuggets are a contender. I still think the Thunder are obviously a contender. The Lakers, they’re a fringe. If they can’t figure out the defensive end, you can’t contend. But if they can figure out the defensive end, we know they have the offensive firepower. But they got to figure out that defense.”
Green shares the popular sentiment that the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets are the top contenders in the league. However, he is still holding faith in the Los Angeles Lakers as a fringe contender. Most believe the Lakers have too many flaws, but Green believes their firepower can lead to winning at the right time.
Draymond Green Questions The Warriors Contending
Green’s bravado about the Warriors typically sees him praising his own team whenever he’s discussing the most dangerous teams in the league. There was praise for Green’s teammates, but he also felt that their record holds them back from being called real contenders.
“We’re not a serious contender right now because of the record,” Green added . “We’re not even a playoff team right now. But down the line, I think the Warriors are returning to your list of serious contenders.” The San Antonio Spurs were then named by Green as a team getting close to the serious contenders list after their strong play in recent months.
Golden State barely holding a .500 record is partially due to Stephen Curry ’s injury time out. However, some shocking losses with Curry on the court have exposed their overall weaknesses even when completely healthy. The Warriors must move up in the standings to have a realistic path towards contending for a title.
Draymond Green Removes Clippers From Contention
The pre-season comments from Green saw him listing the Los Angeles Clippers as one of the teams that will contend for an NBA Championship this season. A shockingly horrendous start saw the Clippers holding one of the worst records in the entire league for over a month until recently scoring more victories.
“You can axe the Clippers off that list,” Green stated. “They have struggled mightily, and they’re right now 9-21, maybe 10-21, but they’ve struggled pretty bad, and you don’t know what they’re going to do at the trade deadline.”
Even with the improved play, the Clippers are fighting to get one of the late play-in spots and realistically may see the 8th seed as their highest ceiling. Green is right about this team losing their contending status. Time will tell if Draymond is accurate about his other takes on the Lakers and his Warriors.
