Detroit Pistons Fantasy Basketball 2023-24 Season Review

August 23, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham (2) celebrates after making a three point shot against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first half at Target Center.

To recap the 2023-24 fantasy basketball season, let’s review and analyze the impact players on the Detroit Pistons had.

Detroit Pistons Fantasy Basketball 2023-24 Season Review

Cade Cunningham

After appearing in only 12 contests last season, Cade Cunningham returned to the court to play 62 games. While he also posted his best category league ranking, many managers still expected more from the former first-overall pick. Despite some elite performances, he’s consistently failed to crack the top 75 due to availability issues. Cunningham is also yet to play over 65 games in a season. However, the guard did record some new career highs and elevated his offensive game. He set new marks in points (averaging over 20 for the first time), assists (top 15 in the NBA), threes, field goal percentage, and free throw efficiency. His best fantasy value came from his playmaking, scoring, foul shooting, and threes. While the 23-year-old’s accuracy from the floor did improve, it was still a weak spot for Cunningham, along with his high turnovers. His impact on the other end was decent, posting a little over one stock per game.

Jalen Duren

To enter his sophomore year, Jalen Duren had a surprisingly hot start by putting up three consecutive double-doubles. He finished 2023-24 ranking eighth in the league in that stat, posting 44. Overall, the 20-year-old significantly improved his game from his rookie season. His minutes increased by four to nearly 30 per game, and he averaged a double-double of points and rebounds. Most of his leaps came on the offensive end through his new personal bests in points, assists, and free throw percentage. Duren’s best contribution was rebounds, averaging the fifth-most in the NBA. He was also highly efficient from the floor, improving his shooting percentage by nearly 18 points from 2022-23. His efficiency at the line wasn’t as effective, but was still decent. Likewise, his blocks, turnovers, and points were slightly underwhelming. The big man’s lowest production came in steals, assists, and turnovers.

  • Stats: 13.8 PPG, 2.4 APG, 11.6 RPG, 0.5 SPG, 0.8 BPG, 0.0 3PM, 2.1 TOV, 62/0/79, 61 GP

Ausar Thompson

Rookie Ausar Thompson displayed some flashes of potential, proving why he was the fifth overall pick. He started the first 18 games for Detroit and quickly revealed his defensive prowess. However, questionable lineup choices eventually got in the way of his starting spot, resulting in a drop in fantasy value due to an inconsistent role. Later in March, a blood clot issue shut him down for the rest of the season. While Thompson went from an add to a drop, managers got a glimpse of what the 21-year-old could do. The defensive ace shone on this end of the court. His best value came from stocks and rebounds, and he usually committed few turnovers. The small forward just managed to average double-digit points but wasn’t very impactful in the category and wasn’t a big playmaker either. Thompson’s worst categories were also three-point shooting and free-throw percentage.

  • Stats: 8.4 PPG, 1.9 APG, 6.4 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 0.9 BPG, 0.3 3PM, 1.3 TOV, 48/19/60, 63 GP
