Ausar Thompson’s Versatility is the X-Factor the Pistons Need

October 12, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

If you’re a Detroit Pistons fan, the preseason is an exciting time to see what the team has been implementing. Whether it’s new offensive sets, unfamiliar lineups, or players taking on bigger roles, this is the perfect time to iron things out.

Among the many storylines worth watching, one stands out early: Ausar Thompson ’s versatility within the offense. Last season, Thompson thrived when given more opportunities as an initiator , showing flashes of his playmaking potential. This year, Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff is looking to Thompson to take on more of a table-setting role — even with dynamic scorers Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey back together.

How will that wrinkle help Detroit’s offense? Can Thompson handle the added responsibility as the lead ball-handler? Let’s dive in.

Ausar Thompson’s Versatility Is The X-Factor The Pistons Need

Playmaking & IQ

When it comes to having the proverbial “it” factor , Thompson shows it through elite athleticism and high basketball IQ. His versatility allows him to take on more offensive responsibilities — and thrive in them.

One of the most underrated parts of his game is his ball-handling and ability to make the right play. He’s effective in pick-and-roll situations, capable of attacking the lane or making the right pass. In transition, Thompson’s vision and decision-making shine, allowing the Pistons to generate easy opportunities.

While it may not be wise to overload him as a full-time initiator, it’s important not to stagnate those chances either. With defenses zeroing in on Cunningham and uncertainty still surrounding Ivey, Thompson’s playmaking could help relieve pressure and keep the offense flowing.

The Limits Of Versatility

While giving Thompson more on-ball responsibilities has upside, there are reasons it might not translate smoothly. Thompson is still developing as a half-court creator, and his handle can look loose when pressured by elite defenders. Against set defenses, his tendency to over-dribble or pick up his dribble early can stall possessions.

Another concern is his outside shooting. Defenders often sag off, daring him to shoot, which can shrink driving lanes. Until Thompson develops consistent perimeter shooting, defenses will keep collapsing the paint and forcing Detroit into difficult shots.

Finally, the mental load of initiating the offense could negatively impact what Thompson does best — defending at a high level, rebounding, and running the floor. Asking him to orchestrate the offense might take away from the energy and instincts that make him such a dynamic two-way player.

The Balancing Act

Ultimately, Thompson’s versatility is a balancing act. Detroit must find the right mix between development and structure — giving him freedom to grow while keeping the offense steady. If Bickerstaff and his staff can manage that balance, Thompson’s growth could elevate the Pistons’ offensive ceiling without compromising what makes him special as a player.

The Last Word

Thompson represents the next evolution of Detroit Pistons basketball — a player whose versatility can change the team’s identity on both ends. Giving him more responsibility isn’t just about adding another playmaker; it’s about trusting his growth and instincts. There will be challenges and growing pains, but that’s expected for a young team still finding its identity.

If Thompson finds the balance between attacking and facilitating, he could become the connector that elevates the Pistons’ offense from stagnant to fluid. His success as a lead initiator might not happen overnight, but his willingness to embrace the challenge speaks volumes. In Detroit, that mindset — fearless, unselfish, and relentless — is precisely what builds a foundation worth believing in.
