The Detroit Pistons separating from Paul Reed did not last very long. The team waived him on Saturday after adding him off waivers in the offseason. Dropping Reed from the roster put Detroit under the minimum salary floor, so they needed to add a player by Sunday. That player was guard Javante McCoy , who was signed to a non-guaranteed deal.
Reed being off the Pistons lasted for about 48 hours. The team announced that the 25-year-old Reed has re-signed with Detroit while they released McCoy just a day after signing him.

A late second round pick in 2020 (58th overall), Reed spent the first four seasons of his career with the Philadelphia 76ers . His most productive year came last season when he appeared in all 82 games (24 starts), with most of his starts coming while Joel Embiid was injured. Reed finished the season with averages of 7.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.0 blocks (all career-highs).
Back in July, the 76ers waived the 6-foot-9 center from the team. A few days later, the Pistons claimed him off waivers. Reed has been in and out of Detroit’s rotation this season, appearing in 12 of their 26 outings. Playing 10.4 minutes per contest, he has posted averages of 4.8 points and 1.9 rebounds. Reed has shot 21-39 (53.8%) from the field, 4-11 (36.4%) from beyond the arc, and 12-15 (80.0%) from the free-throw line.
New Deal Comes In For Less Than Reed’s Original Contract
Detroit added Reed off waivers in July, and thus added his $7.7 million non-guaranteed contract. That contract would become guaranteed in January, but the team released him weeks before that date was to hit.
Releasing him, just to re-sign him a couple days later, has made Reed’s contract much more reasonable for Detroit for the rest of the season. Omari Sankofa of The Detroit Press tweeted out that Reed’s new deal will be for the veteran’s minimum. By adding McCoy (for a day), and then bringing back Reed, the Pistons have reached the minimum salary floor.
The Pistons are currently 10-16, 11th-place in the Eastern Conference. While the record isn’t great, Detroit has played much-improved basketball compared to last year’s disastrous 14-68 season. The Pistons play on Monday night at home against the Miami Heat .
