4 Potential Landing Spots for Undrafted Judah Mintz

July 1, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Syracuse Orange guard Judah Mintz (3) shoots against Louisville Cardinals forward Brandon Huntley-Hatfield (5) during the first half at KFC Yum! Center.

After not being selected in the 2024 NBA Draft, undrafted guard Judah Mintz has a few teams who may be interested in him. The former Syracuse guard had pre-draft workouts with the Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic. Young teams like the Toronto Raptors and Detroit Pistons could also utilize the crafty guard’s talent. He could impress in the NBA Summer League to earn a roster spot. Or, with how the free agent market shakes out, some teams may need a player with Mintz’s skill set.

4 Potential Landing Spots for Undrafted Judah Mintz

Boston Celtics

As mentioned, the Celtics held a pre-draft workout and invited Mintz to attend. Of all the players who worked out for the Celtics, Mintz is the only one not currently signed. Boston has had several Syracuse players grace their rosters, such as Kris Joseph and Fab Melo . Also, Oshae Brissett is fresh off an NBA championship and may partake in the 2024 Paris Olympics . While Mintz isn’t known for his defense, the Maryland native was second in the ACC in steals per game during his sophomore year. The Celtics were tied for second to last in steals per game with 6.8. Obviously, Mintz wouldn’t be thrust into the rotation if he were to get signed. Still, it’d be good for him to play in a system with low expectations. This would allow him to focus on the weaker parts of his game, like three-point shooting.

Orlando Magic

Surprisingly, the Magic was the only other team to host Mintz for a pre-draft workout. Orlando has a fun, young roster loaded with talent. They possess many guards with NBA-level skills, but not many of them can score like Mintz. Markelle Fultz has become a do-it-all Swiss Army knife, and Jalen Suggs is known for his three and ability. Mintz could be a microwave off the bench, providing a scoring punch for the second unit. NBA.com compared the Syracuse alumni to Terry Rozier , which is a fitting comparison and a compliment. Hopefully, Mintz can get his three-ball to fall like Rozier, which would significantly elevate his game.

Toronto Raptors

Toronto has fully moved on from their 2019 NBA Championship. Where do the Raptors go from here? After signing Immanuel Quickley to a deal and exercising their team option on Bruce Brown’s contract, Toronto has started piecing together their future roster. Mintz would be a great addition, as the team has the “rebuilding minutes” necessary for him to grow his game. They could let Garrett Temple and Gary Trent Jr . walk in free agency and use the Miami Heat method of signing undrafted free agents. Syracuse is no stranger to Toronto, as Malachi Richardson briefly joined the team from 2017-2019. Maybe they’re ready for another dose of Orange in the form of Mintz.

Detroit Pistons

With new general manager Trajan Langdon in town, it’s hard to predict exactly how he’ll build the roster around Cade Cunningham . While Langdon was with the New Orleans Pelicans, he drafted players such as Kira Lewis Jr . and Jordan Hawkins . Neither player is strikingly similar to Mintz, but it shows that he may have an affinity towards young, explosive guards. Like Toronto, Detroit can give Mintz the minutes he needs to progress his game. He could also reconnect with his old teammate, Buddy Boeheim .
