VIDEO: Watch Jakes Bates nail a 52-yard, game-winning kick and the on-field celebration the ensued.
The Detroit Lions just completed one of the most improbable comeback victories in franchise history. They were down 23-7 at halftime, and still 23-13 at the start of the fourth quarter. Jared Goff threw five interceptions to the Houston Texans , yet the Lions never gave up.
The defense pitched a shutout in the second half, and the Lions had a shot to win it in the final seconds of the game.
Enter Jake Bates.
Just a few minutes prior, the Lions kicker nailed a 58-yard field goal to tie the game up with five minutes left. After Detroit got another stop—and the Texans missed their own go-ahead field goal—it was up to Bates to come through again.
And he sure came through:

Bates remains perfect on his field goals for the 2024 season. He has now made 14 of 14 field goals and added a couple 50+ yarders to his resume on Sunday night.
As you may expect, the vibes after the kick were immaculate. Here are some scenes from NRG Stadium after Bates’ game-winning kick that moved the Lions to 8-1 on the season.

And, unsurprisingly, Jake Bates went home with some hardware. He got NBC’s game ball—along with Carlton Davis for his two-interception—and he was awarded another game ball from coach Dan Campbell in the locker room after the game.

Congrats to Bates for an outstanding start to his 2024 season, and congrats to the Lions for their historic 8-1 start to the season.
