A look at the Detroit Lions locker room and Dan Campbell’s speech following their win over the Vikings—and clinching of the NFC’s top seed.
The Dan Campbell speech after a Detroit Lions win has become appointment viewing. That is especially the case after the Lions do something they’ve never done before. Say, for example, going 15-2, sweeping their entire division, winning back-to-back NFC North titles, and earning the NFC’s No. 1 seed. Those are all first-time accomplishments for the Detroit Lions franchise, and Campbell let everyone know in the locker room following their Sunday night win.
“You guys look like you remember who the fuck you are!” Campbell started after the team’s post-game prayer.
It’s a strong opening line because that was the first time the Lions—particularly their defense—looked like the Super Bowl favorite this team was for most of the season prior to their injuries. The two key players for Detroit’s iconic performance on defense, cornerback Amik Roberts and linebacker Alex Anzalone, unsurprisingly got game balls from Campbell.
“Five total tackles, one pass defended,” Campbell started. “Only gave 18 (Justin Jefferson)—(he) had three catches. Mr. Amik Robertson.”
Then, turning to Anzalone, “Seven total tackles, one quarterback hit, one pass defense. Welcome back, Alex Anzalone,” Campbell said.
Of course, there had to be a game ball left for Detroit’s biggest star of the evening. Jahmyr Gibbs posted 170 yards of offense and four touchdowns, putting this game away for good in the second half.
To close things out, Campbell highlighted just how tough it is to get where the Lions are today.
“What we’ve done is not easy. It’s not easy,” Campbell said. “But I’m telling you what, man. I’ve said it all along. We’ve got a special group, man. And this has been coming a long time. That’s a lot of hard work and we are the number one fucking seed with a bye, gentlemen!”
