One more game to go before almost half the roster vanishes.
Preseason Game 2 for the Detroit Lions helped clarify much of the expanded roster. Wide receivers made plays, defensive players sought to separate themselves from each other, and the whole operation benefited from having a few series against genuine NFL starters when the starters for Kansas City were in the game. All in all a fairly productive day.
Nevertheless, the limits of 53 roster spots on the line means there are a lot of guys who have performed well so far who just won’t benefit from the math. It’s the hard work and depressing work of NFL roster decisions, and it’s looming for at least a few players in this iteration of the Detroit Lions.
On this week’s Pride of Detroit PODcast, we’re breaking down more from preseason Game 2, including fan excitement over quarterback Hendon Hooker and a game-winner by kicker Jake Bates. We also examine these heavy choices the Lions have to make with top performers like Kaden Davis, Isaiah Williams and a whole lot of EDGE performers—yet we find James Houston not among them and wonder how much pressure is being placed upon his roster spot. We also give an eye to what we need to see in the final preseason game.
