With a new set of coordinators, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell can cement himself as a top head coach in football.
It’s list season!
We’re starting to see some NFL analysts produce their offseason content to fill time, and that means ranking players, positions, coaches, and everything in between. The Detroit Lions are likely to top several of those lists, but one person out there still seems to draw some skepticism: Lions coach Dan Campbell.
Many still perceive Campbell as the meathead, motivational type—and that type only. And now that he’s lost “offensive genius” Ben Johnson, some are expecting a significant drop-off, or as some NFC North foes would put it: Dan Campbell getting exposed.
But as special teams coordinator Dave Fipp continues to try and remind us, there is much more to Campbell than the common perception.
“I don’t think it comes across—which is why I say it all the time–but just how brilliant he is,” Fipp said last week. “I mean, he is super smart, and he likes to be the tough, gruff, grit, and all that attitude and all that stuff, but, man, he is very, very thorough and very, very smart, and very calculated with everything he does.”
Over on our YouTube page, Meko Scott and Morgan Cannon talk about this exact topic, and whether Campbell can weather the storm of losing both Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. There will undoubtedly be an adjustment period, but how long will it take? How much trust has Campbell earned based on his previous hires? And how much will Campbell have his hands on the steering wheel when it comes to the offense and defense?
All of those topics are debated and discussed below.
