Star Quarterback Not Participating in Camp, Could Seek Trade

July 23, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

love training camp trade

Star quarterback Jordan Love is not participating in training camp so he could seek a trade if he doesn’t receive the contract he wants. According to a report , it’s no surprise that Love doesn’t partake in the Packers’ training camp since he doesn’t have a new deal in hand so Green Bay is working towards one. Love will engage in a hold-in by attending camp but he won’t be participating in team drills until the Packers give him a monster contract . However, general manager Brian Gutekunst believes they are close to a new deal so it looks like the two sides are negotiating.

Love would be the latest quarterback to receive a high-end contract after Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence got new deals that have reset the market. The team is still weighing the risk of extending Love since he only has one strong season up his sleeve against what guarantees they’re giving him in his new deal. They’re seeing how Love’s new deal is going to have cap implications in the long-term future which is smart but waiting forever wouldn’t be a good thing. The Packers are wanting to avoid a situation where they let Love create some animosity in the locker room by requesting a trade from a team that needs a quarterback.

Quarterbacks like Dak Prescott are due for a new contract as well so the Packers are looking to get one through before the Cowboys. Green Bay already has their long-term solution at the quarterback situation since parting ways with Aaron Rodgers so it’s a matter of “when” he gets his new contract. However, anything can happen in this league and many teams are eager to get their hands on the best available on the market.

Potential Trade Fits

New Orleans Saints

This one shouldn’t be surprising since Derek Carr is already on the hot seat and if the Saints don’t feel like he’s the answer then they could make a blockbuster switch. However, it’s not happening on the Packers’ watch since they’re close to a new deal with Love but the unexpected may happen. Love could demand more money if Green Bay ends up not giving him what he wants. However, the Saints have bigger problems on their watch being that they don’t have a lot of receivers on hand.

Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed are not bringing this team to the promised land so the Saints are still building. If Love is without a contract and the Saints need an emergency quarterback then they could call up the Packers for a trade. However, both of these teams are in the NFC so it’s hard to imagine that the Packers would be willing to trade him away unless he’s unhappy.

Los Angeles Chargers

Justin Herbert doesn’t have the leverage this season being that he doesn’t have big playmakers since Mike Williams and Keenan Allen are no longer on the team. Jim Harbaugh is a new coach in town so no one should count out the fact if he doesn’t see Herbert as the long-term answer. Love should be around Green Bay for the next decade but if he feels like it isn’t the place to be then money wouldn’t be an issue. It probably won’t happen for a long time but it could in the future.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys are optimistic to get new contracts for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb but Dallas has been unpredictable lately. Dallas are at a crossroads since paying just one player would just mean that they have to immediately follow up with paying another. However, Lamb is planning to hold out until he receives a new deal similar to Love but the Cowboys are in a worst-case scenario. No one should expect the Packers to trade their quarterback to their most hated team but it isn’t impossible.

What could happen is the Cowboys could make a swap with Prescott for Love but even then it’s a 50/50 chance.
