Saints Could Target Former First Rounder in Trade Following Latest Retirement

Following Derek Carr’s retirement, the New Orleans Saints could target former first-round pick Teddy Bridgewater in a trade before the 2025 regular season. According to one report , a source believes that Bridgewater may take over New Orleans in the future as far as the signal-caller. Originally selected in the 2014 NFL Draft, the former Louisville product became one of the most promising quarterbacks for the Minnesota Vikings to begin his career, but due to a scary injury, he wasn’t the same athlete. Bridgewater became a journeyman across several NFL rosters, and he might finally have an opportunity to showcase his skills.

Last postseason, the quarterback came out of retirement to take over for struggling Jared Goff late during the final stretch of the regular season and during the divisional round against the Washington Commanders. Bridgewater got the Lions back in the groove of things to boost the momentum, so that Goff could return to hopefully bring the Lions back to life, despite it not happening. Bridgewater did his part to show he still has the arm to be a reliable starter, and the Saints are the perfect fit for his presence. Being that the Saints have a murky quarterback room with Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough battling it out for the starting job, it shouldn’t surprise anyone if they make a move to trade for Bridgewater.

However, the Saints won’t be the only team interested in Bridgewater. There could be other rosters during the 2025 campaign that may take a chance on him, and these four teams might.

Saints Could Target Former First Rounder Teddy Bridgewater in Trade Following Latest Retirement – 4 Other Potential Fits

Possible Destinations

Carolina Panthers

Last season, head coach Dave Canales was not hesitant to bench quarterback Bryce Young due to his unproductivity. The same case applies for this season, despite there is a lot of momentum circulating around the quarterback since they got a lot of capable weapons throughout after free agency and the draft. The Panthers did sign veteran Andy Dalton on a new contract , so they have that bridge if Young doesn’t work out. However, Bridgewater is the better quarterback in this situation over Dalton and could lead them to at least a wild-card round.

Atlanta Falcons

Meanwhile, it’s been an interesting transition since the Falcons drafted Michael Penix Jr. in last year’s draft . Kirk Cousins will likely get cut before the regular season, so they will need a reliable veteran backup either way. Teddy Bridgewater doesn’t have to start for this offense, but if the Falcons feel like Penix can’t play up to standards, they could change their offense to fit with Bridgewater. They have a high-profile wideout in Drake London, and someone like Bridgewater could easily spot him in the aerial attack.

Washington Commanders

However, it shouldn’t be surprising if the Commanders did trade for a quarterback. Nobody is taking Jayden Daniels ‘ job, but despite Marcus Mariota coming back, he won’t be around for long, as he will likely want to sign with a team that needs a starting quarterback. Bridgewater could be used in certain special play situations and could continue to mentor Daniels on the sidelines.

Baltimore Ravens

The same thing can be done in Baltimore behind back-to-back MVP Lamar Jackson. The Ravens got everyone by surprise, signing Cooper Rush as their new backup for relief. Rush is average, but not good towards excellent numbers. Bridgewater has more capabilities and could turn into a reliable specialist in certain moments here as well.
