The Detroit Lions have parted ways with another big-bodied receiver in Daurice Fountain.
Per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit Lions are cutting wide receiver Daurice Fountain.
Fountain spent the entirety of 2023 on the Lions’ practice squad. After signing a futures deal to return to Detroit for 2024, Fountain looked like he had improved during the early days of training camp. His strong play was rewarded with some playing time in the first-team offense. However, that production slowly waned throughout camp. In the preseason, Fountain caught just two balls for 15 yards on seven targets. He had a particularly tough drop in the preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers .
With the Lions cutting Fountain and Donovan Peoples-Jones, the Lions are out of big-bodied receivers to fill their X role on offense. In fact, in the entire receiver room, only Amon-Ra St. Brown (6-foot) and Jameson Williams (6-foot-1) stand above six feet tall.
However, coach Dan Campbell indicated the offense should run fine without that big-bodied receiver on the roster .
“With what we’ve got on this roster, (offensive coordinator) Ben [Johnson] does a hell of a job of making sure that we put guys in position to have success and let our guys go win and whatever it takes to allow them to do that,” Campbell said. “So, no, I wouldn’t say it limits us.”
That said, there should be options available for the Lions after the cuts from other teams. Some potential fits who have already been reportedly cut include former Giants WR Isaiah Hodgins, Panthers WR Terrace Marshall, and (expected to be cut or traded) Broncos WR Tim Patrick.
