Yet another Lions coach interviews for a possible promotion with another franchise.
The attrition on the Detroit Lions coaching staff may not be over. According to ESPN’s Dallas Cowboys reporter Todd Archer, Lions assistant head coach/running backs coach Scottie Montgomery recently interviewed for the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator position .
As of right now, there are three other known candidates for the job: former Browns OC Ken Dorsey , Falcons tight end coach Kevin Koger , and the current favorite to win the job, Cardinals offensive line coach Klayton Adams, who is getting an in-person interview on Friday.

Montgomery has been the Lions’ assistant head coach/running backs coach for the past two seasons and is viewed as one of the more beloved coaches on the team. He often speaks from the heart in front of the entire team, and he’s been instrumental in the growth of 2023 first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs. This year, Gibbs finished fifth in rushing yards (1,412), third in yards per carry (5.6), and t-first in rushing touchdowns (16), despite splitting the load considerably with David Montgomery.
The Lions’ offensive coaching staff has seen a ton of overturn this offseason. Already, the Lions have lost offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El, tight ends coach Steve Heiden, assistant quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett, and the Lions have already hired a new pass game coordinator with Tanner Engstrand expected to be the New York Jets’ next offensive coordinator.
That’s a lot of moving parts for an offense in one season, but it’s to be expected when Detroit has produced three straight seasons of top-five offenses.
