The Detroit Lions have begun their roster cuts with two notable wide receivers.
The Detroit Lions roster cuts are starting to come in, and they’ve begun with a couple of receivers. According to Jordan Schultz, the Lions are waiving Kaden Davis and releasing Donovan Peoples-Jones.
Peoples-Jones was given every opportunity to win the WR-X role this training camp, but the production never came on the field. In the preseason, he caught just two of nine targets for 31 yards, and it wasn’t much better in training camp. The Lions traded for Peoples-Jones last offseason in the hopes that he could grow into a significant role. However, despite Josh Reynolds’ departure this offseason, he couldn’t win the job.
Davis first made the Lions’ roster after impressing during rookie minicamp as a tryout . Early in training camp, he would make a big play on nearly a daily basis. However, he cooled off a bit as camp rolled on. That said, he did have the third-most productive preseason among all Lions receivers, catching five passes for 96 yards—including this impressive catch-and-run touchdown against the Kansas City Chiefs .

Unfortunately for Davis, he wasn’t the big-bodied receiver the Lions were looking for. And while he could play the Z-receiver role in Detroit’s offense, they already have several options there, including Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown. And in terms of the smaller-bodied receivers, the Lions already have Kalif Raymond and roster-hopeful Isaiah Williams.
That said, there weren’t many standouts from the Lions’ receiver corps this preseason, and it’s quite possible Davis returns to the team on their practice squad. As a player who has only been in the league for two years, Davis will be subject to waivers. If he goes unclaimed through Wednesday at noon, he will then be free to sign with any team, be it a practice squad contract or on a 53-man roster. Peoples-Jones is a veteran and can sign with any team once officially cut.
