The Indianapolis Colts are surprising plenty of teams across the league, but they could use some help on defense and may trade for cornerback Joshua Williams. According to one source , Williams may join in on the fun of what the Colts are doing, which would give the cornerback a fresh start either way. Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the former two-time Super Bowl champion is probably nearing the end of his tenure in Kansas City. Ever since the Chiefs got Kristian Fulton this past offseason in free agency, the team hasn’t been utilizing Williams.
With Williams becoming a free agent this upcoming offseason, it only makes sense for the Chiefs to trade him for some draft capital. Perhaps the Colts might be open to sending a reliable wide receiver like Alec Pierce to Kansas City, but the chances of that happening are slim. Indianapolis is having one of the best offenses led by quarterback Daniel Jones, and they wouldn’t want to send any of their capable aerial attack threats to a potential playoff team like the Chiefs, even though they’re 2-3 for the first time in years. The Colts had one of the deepest cornerback units, but lost veteran Xavien Howard to retirement, and third-round pick Justin Walley tore his ACL before the 2025 campaign began.
Williams could be a reliable replacement as a backup for both Chavarius Ward and Kenny Moore, but these three teams could intervene as they’re in the market for a cornerback as well.

Other Possible Fits
Dallas Cowboys
Even though the Dallas Cowboys need another running back after losing Miles Sanders for the season, they should be in the market for a new cornerback. Trevon Diggs is somewhat reliable, but that’s only when he wants to. However, due to his close relationship with Micah Parsons and his teasing that he’s open to departing , the Cowboys should look for the next replacement. While Nickelback Reddy Steward has shown flashes of potential, they can’t expect to rely on just a situational moment, so they need some consistency in their cornerback room.
Daron Bland is on lock to stay in Dallas, but they must find him help as well since he missed some time due to injuries again. Williams won’t get the start and isn’t going to drastically boost this defense, which is the worst in the league, but it gives them another body to lean on temporarily to boost the corps.
Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears are floating in the same boat. They lost Jaylon Johnson for the rest of the season, and they could use Williams for depth. Chicago doesn’t need the best cornerback in the trade market, and someone like Williams could help Nahshon Wright and Tyrique Stevenson in situational plays.
Detroit Lions
If anyone in the league needs a new secondary man, it’s the Detroit Lions. It’s like deja vu for the team again since they lost several capable cornerbacks in a loss to the Washington Commanders in the NFL divisional round. The Lions would easily be the best football team as long as they can find depth, and Williams isn’t a difference maker, but it helps fend off the loss of DJ Reed.
