Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was one of the hottest names this past coaching cycle. But according to PFT’s Mike Florio, the innovative OC could be “waiting a while” for a head job of his own.
Speaking on the eight head coaching openings that were filled this offseason, Johnson commented:
“I would say there’s a good chance five of them are out of jobs in three years. … I’m not willing to go down the other path yet, unless I feel really good about how it’s gonna unfold.”
Johnson also pointed to things like ownership stability and retaining play-calling duties as some of his main deciding factors.
Reacting to the coach’s statements, Florio basically said that there are rarely (if ever) any perfect situations. Writing :
Bad teams often stay bad. Good teams aren’t usually changing coaches. Currently, the only sure-thing job would be in Kansas City, if/when Andy Reid retires. Good luck getting that job. … if Johnson is waiting for a perfect situation, he might be waiting a while.
Johnson has said that he’s ready to be a head coach right now but knows he has a great thing going under Dan Campbell in Detroit. We’ll see if that ends up being the best decision a year or two from now.
