The Las Vegas Raiders are entering yet another crucial offseason as they have fired head coach Antonio Pierce. One particular coach has been rumored to be the favorite to land the head coaching vacancy in Las Vegas.

Raiders Head Coach Rumor Swirling

One particular offensive coordinator has been consistently linked to the head coaching vacancy in Las Vegas. Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is reportedly the favorite to land the head coaching position with the Raiders. Johnson has been crucial to Detroit’s offensive success. The Lions averaged a whopping 33.2 points per game this season, the most in the NFL.  After being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2022, he transformed the Lions’ offense into one of the most dynamic units in the league.

Known for his innovative play calling, Johnson has maximized the skillset of quarterback Jared Goff , a player many wrote off after his trade from the Los Angeles Rams. Under Johnson’s leadership, the Lions have boasted a balanced attack, showcasing a potent passing game complemented by a strong ground game. He has a great ability to develop talent and craft game plans tailored to his roster’s strengths.

Why the Raiders Could Be Interested

The Las Vegas Raiders are in the midst of a rebuild, and their coaching decision will likely define the direction of the franchise for years to come. Following a poor season and a half under Antonio Pierce, the Raiders are searching for stability and success in their next head coach. Johnson’s offensive acumen could be the perfect fit for a team that has struggled to find consistency on that side of the ball.

The Raiders have key offensive pieces, including wide receiver Jakobi Meyers and star rookie tight end Brock Bowers. However, the team and offense underperformed in 2024. Las Vegas has the number six pick in the 2025 NFL draft which will have a major impact on the future of the franchise. Additionally, Johnson’s ability to work with quarterbacks could be crucial for the Raiders. Las Vegas has consistently struggled to sustain good quarterback play.

Challenges for Johnson in Las Vegas

While the Raiders present an intriguing opportunity, the job comes with challenges. The team’s front office has faced criticism for inconsistent decision-making. Ownership has also struggled to maintain stability within the organization. Star receiver Davante Adams requested a trade, leading to him being traded to the Jets, and defensive end Maxx Crosby’s elite prime is being wasted on defense. Johnson would need to navigate consistent roster turnover if he were hired as head coach.

Another factor to consider is the Raiders play in an elite division. The Chiefs , Chargers, and Broncos all made the playoffs this season. Johnson would be under immense pressure to deliver results quickly, which will be difficult in a loaded division.

Is Johnson Ready to Make the Leap?

For the Raiders, hiring Johnson as head coach would be a bold move, signaling a commitment to innovation and growth. For Johnson, taking on a head coaching role in Las Vegas would mark a significant career milestone. Although, the job is not without its challenges.

It remains to be seen whether Johnson will take the leap or stay in Detroit to continue building on the Lions’ success. One thing is certain, Johnson is focused on Saturday’s game against the Commanders. However, his name will remain at the center of coaching rumors regardless, with the Raiders leading the charge.
