It is never a good thing when a professional athlete is in the news for being arrested, which was recently the case for Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams.
Police Investigating Lions Wide Receiver Jameson Williams
Williams was pulled over by police in Detroit on October 8th. He was riding in the passenger seat while his brother drove the vehicle. Williams and his brother were pulled over for an alleged traffic violation. After being pulled over, police asked if there were any weapons in the vehicle. Williams’ brother said that there were two guns, one in the back seat and one under Williams passenger seat.
What Went Down
According to reports, the gun in the back seat was registered to Williams’ brother, who had a concealed and carry pistol license. However, the gun under Williams seat was registered to him, and he did not have a conceal pistol license. After being handcuffed and put into the back of the police car, a supervisor and sergeant showed up at the scene. The sergeant then made some calls to several high ranking officers. After doing so, Williams was released from his handcuffs and free to go.
What Happens Now
The Detroit Police Department is still working through the details of this case. In a statement, the Police Department said the investigation “continues to evolve.” The Detroit Lions have released a statement saying:
“Jameson made us aware immediately that he was a passenger in a routine traffic stop on October 8th. We discussed the incident with him and have kept the league informed of what we know. We understand he was released without incident or citation. It is now our understanding that the Detroit Police Department is revisiting the matter. Jameson has hired an attorney, and we will not be commenting further out of respect for the legal process.”
Williams will have to sit out this Sunday regardless due to a PED violation. However, after that he should be in the clear to continue playing, pending the conclusion of the investigation.
Williams Season Outlook
Williams has been having a solid season in Detroit. He already has a career high 365 receiving yards , and the Lions have the best offense in the league. If Williams can continue to take the field for Detroit, look for his success to continue, particularly as a deep ball threat. As the review of this case continues, the team, fans, and league officials await further information on the prosecutor’s decision and any potential repercussions.
