Jameson Williams’ emergence continues into year four. Can he unseat Amon-Ra St. Brown as the Lions’ WR1?
For the second consecutive offseason, the hype surrounding Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams has proven to be true. After a breakout 2024 season in which Jamo crossed the 1,000-yard receiving yardage mark, new Lions offensive coordinator John Morton talked about how he expected Jamo to continue to be a focal point of the new offense.
Now that training camp has rolled around, we’re seeing more evidence that this offseason was not just rumor, and that Jamo’s development has continued. During Monday’s practice, Jamo has an impressive sideline catch with a toe tap in the end zone.
Jamo’s showing more than just speed; he’s showing a mature route tree, spatial awareness, and good hands. It’s especially impressive that he’s doing so in the red zone with press coverage, where he doesn’t have the ability to just run past people.
With Jamo’s maturation proving to be very real heading into 2025, it brings up a question that doesn’t sound so far-fetched anymore: can he lead the Lions in receiving yards in 2025?
Question of the day: Who will lead the Lions in receiving yards in 2025?
My answer: I still have to go with Amon-Ra St. Brown, but I think Jamo will make it a close competition.
In 2024, St. Brown finished the year with 1,263 receiving yards compared to Williams’ 1,001. Opponents figured out the newly minted All-Pro needed to be shut down, and he had a “down year” (if you can call 1,200+ yards a down year) following his 1,515-yard 2023 campaign. With Williams’ continued growth, Sam LaPorta re-emerging down the stretch in 2024, and Jahmy Gibbs cementing himself as a receiving threat, St. Brown should have a lot more open looks in 2025.
I still see Williams growing well past his 2024 total, especially if he continues to do what we saw in the Monday’s highlight clip in close quarters. I could easily see him going beyond 1200 yards in 2025, but I think St. Brown will have a rebound year to get closer to his 2023 yardage total.
