The intensity is already ramping up at Detroit Lions camp. Who has the most to prove once the pads come on next week?
We’re only a few days into training camp and the intensity is already starting to ramp up. With players wearing shells for the first time on Friday, there were reports of some skirmishes breaking out between players after a few physical plays. It seems players are itching to get those pads on, which will happen on Monday after a day off for the players.
Today’s Question of the Day is…
Which Detroit Lions player has the most to prove once the pads come on?
One of the players at the top of my list is Levi Onwuzurike. We’ve already highlighted him a few times as a guy that needs to perform this year if he wants to remain in Detroit long term. There had been positive reports about his play during OTAs in the spring, but that doesn’t mean a whole lot if he isn’t able to continue to stack those good days when the pads come on.
On offense, I think Colby Sorsdal is someone that the Lions are really hoping will take a leap this year. Due to injuries accumulating, I think the Lions were forced to throw Sorsdal into the mix a little earlier than they would have hoped last year. They also had him filling in for three different positions in five appearances, which couldn’t have been an easy task for a rookie that was considered to be a raw prospect out of college.
Sorsdal has been repping with the twos primarily as the reserve right tackle. It’s a position that he’s most comfortable with, playing all of his snaps at RT with William & Mary. It’s also notable to point out that if the Lions have either of their starting tackles go down, then it’s the right tackle position that is likely to be filled by their top reserve OT. If Decker goes down, then it’s Sewell that will move over to the left side, and if Sewell is hurt, then Decker will stay at LT and the reserve will slot in on the right side. All eyes are on Sorsdal to see whether or not he is ready to take on that responsibility.
