Which of the Detroit Lions’ upcoming training camp battles are most intriguing.
With less than a week from the start of Detroit Lions training camp, the hype for football is steadily rising.
For over the past week, Erik Schlitt has been previewing training camp by looking at each position and the most notable battles within them. If you need to catch up a bit, here are links to the ongoing series that have dropped so far:
- Quarterback
- Running back
- Tight end
- Wide receiver
- Offensive tackle
- Interior offensive line
- Defensive end
- Defensive tackle
Today, I want to focus on just one battle—the one you may be itching to hear about. The one that may have the biggest impact on the team, or maybe just one you’re personally interested in. With the way the Lions roster is set up, there aren’t a lot of starting jobs up for grabs. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t intrigue at QB2, RB3, EDGE3, CB3, or any other depth battles that could mean a lot.
So today’s Question of the Day is:
Which Lions training camp battle are you most excited to see?
My answer: Well, I already said that Giovanni Manu was the player I’m most interested to watch, so in a lot of ways the OT3 battle between him and Dan Skipper, among others, is high on my list. But let’s diversify my answers and talk about a different depth battle.
I’m fascinated to see how the interior defensive line plays out. I thought Erik did a fantastic job breaking down all of the big questions with this group , and I think he really highlighted the huge unknowns. For one, who is going to fill Alim McNeill’s spot while he’s gone for the first half of the season or so? Will Levi Onwuzurike be essentially a one-to-one replacement? Or will the likes of Onwuzurike, Roy Lopez, Mekhi Wingo, and Tyleik Williams all pitch in to fill in by committee.
Speaking of which, Williams remains the most interesting player of the group. Obviously, the Lions have high hopes in the first-round pick, but where will he play early in his career. The Lions have made a ton of comparisons between him and McNeill, so does that mean he’ll play more nose tackle early and expand to 3-tech later in his career? Or will his experience at the 3-tech in college allow for an earlier transition there?
There are even more questions at the position like: will Josh Paschal play more on the interior or the edge? Will Wingo be ready by training camp? How much does DJ Reader have left in the tank?
I am fascinated to see how the DT room plays out. What about you? Share your favorite upcoming camp battles in the comment section below.
