What will you be watching for when the Lions travel to East Rutherford for joint practices with the Giants?
Now more than a week into training camp, the Detroit Lions have one practice remaining in Allen Park before packing up and heading to New Jersey for joint practices with the New York Giants .
As expected, there have been some really competitive battles taking place on various parts of the roster. However, after working against one another for eight days, the opportunity to compete against someone other than their teammates should bring a smile to some faces.
After Friday morning’s practice, the team will have Saturday off and Sunday as a travel day before two practices on Monday and Tuesday of next week. And while the actual preseason game against the Giants is on Thursday, most (if not all) of the work for the majority of the starters will take place during the practices.
Coaches can get situational work in a relatively controlled environment. With that in mind, you can see why it’s become the new normal for starters to get their reps in this way rather than in an actual game.
That brings us to today’s Question of the Day:
What will you be watching for during joint practices with the Giants?
My Answer: I want to see defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike continue his strong play against the Giants’ offensive line. Think about it—we keep hearing about the plays he has been making against the Lions’ offensive line, and the majority of you reading this article are well aware of how talented that unit is.
I would love to read some of Jeremy’s observations that detail Onwuzurike blowing up a running back in the backfield, or pushing a guard right into the lap of Giants’ quarterback Daniel Jones. If Onwuzurike can be that nightmare of a three-technique to pair with defensive tackle Alim McNeill and edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson—this defense could really take off in 2024.
How about you? What will you be watching during joint practices with the Giants? Let us know by leaving a comment with your answer at the bottom of the page.
