Now that the Detroit Lions have made most of their roster moves via free agency and the NFL Draft, what was their best move?
When it comes to the Detroit Lions ’ offseason additions, the team didn’t come away with a bounty of new faces. That was mostly by design. Lions general manager Brad Holmes made it clear that they are in savings mode—attempting to keep as many core players around via re-signings while also saving cap space for future extensions.
Free agency resulted in the loss of only two starters, but it also meant the addition of just eight players : QB Kyle Allen, TE Kenny Yeboah, WR Ronnie Bell, NT Roy Lopez, LB Grant Stuard, CB Avonte Maddox, CB Rock Ya-Sin, and CB D.J. Reed.
Of course, the heart of all of Detroit’s roster additions have—and will—come from the NFL Draft . The Lions added seven more players this offseason through the draft , and all of them have a decent shot at making the 53-man roster .
So, combining free agency with the draft, today’s Question of the Day is:
Which Lions’ offseason addition are you most excited about?
My answer: It’s a boring answer, but it’s first-round pick Tyleik Williams.
Williams will not only help the Lions keep their run defense among the best in the league, but I truly believe he has some serious pass rushing potential the Lions will tap into. While many fans were thrilled about the opportunity to add an edge rusher opposite Aidan Hutchinson, I’ve always been enamored with teams that are capable of generating pressure from the inside. It can be far more disruptive and panic-inducing to opposing quarterbacks—not to mention it can help feed a guy like Hutchinson. The market for elite defensive tackles has blown up for a reason. Guys like Chris Jones, Dexter Lawrence, Leonard Williams, Jalen Carter, and Milton Williams can be just as impactful as some of the best edge rushers in football.
And while I don’t exactly expect Williams to step into the league and immediately be a hell-raiser on the same level as the players above, I do think he has that eventual potential. And to get a player like that at the tail end of the first round would be a gigantic win for the Lions and Holmes.
