What was the one biggest takeaway from the Detroit Lions’ media sessions at the 2025 NFL owners meetings.
The NFL owners meetings can be a marathon of information for every team. Not only does the league make some pretty significant rule changes every year, but each franchise lets key members of their organization meet with the media over two or three days.
For the Detroit Lions , that typically means coach Dan Campbell, general manager Brad Holmes, and team president/CEO Rod Wood all meet with local media for long (20+ minute) sessions. On top of that, this year all three also met with Dan Miller for an additional 4-7 minutes. If you haven’t already, you can watch all of those media sessions online:

It’s all an overload of information. We’ve done our best to cover the biggest stories here on the website . But let’s talk about the biggest takeaways of the week. Today’s Question of the Day is:
What is your biggest takeaways from the NFL owners meetings in 2025?
My answer: It has to be the shaky ground on Jameson Williams’ future in Detroit. While Holmes made it clear the Lions intend to activate Williams’ fifth-year option , which will keep him under contract in Detroit through the 2026 season, it’s what he said next that certainly raised some eyebrows.
“In terms of extension, again, there’s a lot of extensions that are hopefully coming,” Holmes said. “But it’s just one that you just don’t know what’s going to happen from a financial standpoint. Because a wide receiver, it’s expensive. It’s very expensive. Look, these are good problems to have.”
While it’s important not to overreact to a non-definitive statement two years out from when the Lions will have to make this decision, it’s also important to compare this to how they’re talking about other players from the same draft class. Holmes and Campbell have both made it very clear that they intend to get Aidan Hutchinson and Kerby Joseph extensions done without question. They have pointed to both players being key pillars to the foundation of this team.
That said, Holmes was very complimentary of Williams’ 2024 season, in which the Lions receiver crossed over 1,000 yards for the first time in his career. That made their upcoming decision to activate his fifth-year option easy.
“Look, he was a tremendous player for us last year. He’s still scratching the surface. I do think he’s got more in him as well,” Holmes said. “So I just think it just makes sense for us to do what we can to keep him around.”
But with all Holmes has been saying about tough financial decisions ahead and him jumping right to the expensive cost of wide receivers when asked about a Williams extension, it’s hard to view Jamo’s future in Detroit as on strong ground. Throw in Campbell’s recent comments about getting younger in the wide receiver room , and it’s not hard to see the Lions potentially preparing for Williams’ departure as soon as this year’s draft.
Now, to be clear, I don’t think the Lions have already made a definitive decision on his future. If Williams takes a huge step again this year, shows more consistency, and stays out of trouble, he could very well enter that territory of “untouchable” within the franchise. But if I had to make a guess today, it’s hard to see him reach a second contract in Detroit.
