Breaking down the best news from Detroit Lions training camp through the first two practices.
We’re only two days into Detroit Lions training camp, so any sort of big, sweeping reactions should be ignored. At this point, the players are still shaking off rust, coaches are starting to get a feel for working together and managing practice, and the pads aren’t even on yet. So as we discuss today’s Question of the Day, keep all of that in mind.
Still, it does feel like there has been a wave of information about the 2025 Detroit Lions already in just two short sessions. We’ve learned more about the team’s intentions on the offensive line , we’ve received some tough injury news , and some new players are already starting to shine .
For now, let’s focus on the positive. Today’s Question of the Day is:
What has been the most encouraging news from Lions training camp through two practices?
My answer: I can’t help it. I’m a sucker for two running back sets, and with the development that Detroit will continue down the road of expanding Jahmyr Gibbs’ role to more wideout sets , that means seeing both him and David Montgomery on the field at the same time.
This isn’t a new concept for Detroit. This was something they were planning to do last year, before training camp injuries set back Gibbs’ development as a route-runner out wide. And while this isn’t something I expect the Lions to run more than a handful of times per game, it does put two of their most electric weapons on the field at the same time, and that could mean even more trouble for opposing defenses.
“It’s super exciting,” Montgomery told me. “Being able to have me and him on the field at the same time, it’ll be tough for defenses to prepare for us.”
In order for the Lions to remain the best offense in the league, they’re going to need to continue to evolve and adapt. Having a new offensive coordinator is naturally going to help with that. And while they don’t want to completely change what was working last year, the addition of a subpackage like this seems like the perfect way to build on top of an offense that was already working.
