It won’t be for quite a while if it does happen, but should the Lions consider moving their practice facility from Allen Park?
In news that should surprise absolutely nobody that is familiar with how things have gone over the last few years, the Detroit Lions have sold out of tickets to attend one of their training camp sessions open to the public .
Prior to the Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell era, it was actually quite easy to come by training camp tickets. For me, personally, I have been a season ticket holder for quite a while, and I don’t ever remember there being a line for training camp tickets before. You could get your tickets when it was convenient for you, and you would pull right up to the facility in Allen Park for parking. It was a pretty seamless process. With that said, those days are long gone.
Now there are thousands of fans in line on the Lions’ website before tickets are even live. Even for the practices that were for Lions Loyal Members only, the line was well into the thousands a full 30 minutes prior to the event going live. And when you do arrive in Allen Park for a practice, you actually park about a mile down the street within the business park where the facility is located, and buses drive you back down to the entrance. It is quite a process, but the team makes it work.
Now, with the team continuing to ascend, people are beginning to wonder if the time has come for the franchise to upgrade, or even completely rebuild their building in a new location.
That brings us to today’s Question of the Day:
Should the Lions relocate their practice facility?
My Answer: I think they have to. Don’t get me wrong, I love the spot in Allen Park. That drive has always signified the beginning of the season for me, and to the franchise’s credit—they have certainly upgraded things over the last several years.
However, the argument to have it moved really boils down to space. Currently, I am not sure how much room for growth they have. It seems that the location in Allen Park could be maxed out from a square footage standpoint, and there have already been talks of the team wanting to host more fans on practice days.
Selfishly, I would love if the team moved the facility into the city of Detroit. The Red Wings, Pistons, and Tigers all have their facilities downtown, so let’s just make it everyone.
How about you? Do you think the Lions should move their practice facility, and if so where? Let us know by leaving a comment with your answer at the bottom of the page.
