Detroit’s top draft priority is to reinforce the Lions’ injury-riddled defense. However, the top defensive talent could be long gone by the time the Lions are on the clock. One underrated prospect could be available late in the first round.
Underrated Draft Prospect Detroit Lions Should Consider
Credit Dan Campbell and former Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn for the Lions overcoming an onslaught of injuries to earn a 15-2 record. But Detroit’s record would be quite different if it weren’t for the outstanding production of the Lions’ elite offense. Many of last season’s victories were because Detroit’s offense stormed back after the defense couldn’t stop the opposition from scoring. As one injury led to another and another, it became apparent the bench depth wasn’t sufficient to replace so many injured starters simultaneously. Although Brad Holmes did an admirable job finding outside talent to shore up the ailing defense, his efforts were a bandaid, not a solution.
Lions Draft Candidates
For the Lions to take the next step in their Super Bowl quest, they must build a stronger defense. Holmes has done a sensational job scouting through the draft. However, the Lions’ success puts the team at a slight disadvantage this year. In all likelihood, top-rated edge prospects Abdul Carter, James Pearce Jr., and Jalon Walker will be off the board long before the Lions’ first pick. This makes Holmes’ job of finding a top-rated talent even harder.
But one potential prospect for the Lions might be available; Ohio State University standout J.T. Tuimoloau . A member of the Buckeyes National Championship team and the nation’s NCAA number one rated defense, Tuimoloau had a big role in their success. But with Tuimoloau’s teammate Jack Sawyer getting the headlines and much of the credit, it’s likely Sawyer will be drafted first. That could work in the Lions’ favor if Tuimoloau is still on the board late in the first round.
Why Tuimoloau Is A Great Draft Prospect
Standing 6’5” tall and weighing 269 lbs. Tuimoloau was a sensational talent all through college. He continued to improve every year and was named All-Big Ten Conference First Team three consecutive years. In 2024 he recorded 61 tackles (35 solo), 12.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and three pass defenses.
In 2022, Tuimoloau’s first year in the All-Big Ten Conference, his extraordinary career day accounted for a total of 21 points for OSU and a victory over rival Penn State. Tuimoloau posted six tackles (three for a loss), two sacks, two interceptions, one pass defense, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in that single game.
Although he played a huge role in the Buckeyes’ winning the National Championship this year, his performance wasn’t as headline-grabbing as Sawyers. In the 2025 Cotton Bowl, Sawyer had a fumble recovery touchdown following a strip sack on Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers. That play led to a Buckeyes victory and subsequent National Championship Title when OSU defeated Notre Dame.
But with Sawyer becoming the bigger star, Tuimoloau faded quietly into the background. Nonetheless, his fade could be the key to the Lions’ drafting him.
Why Tuimoloau Is A Solid Fit For the Lions
Tuimoloau can play both defensive lineman and edge. Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard has indicated he will be relying heavily on his front line this year. Therefore, it makes sense to recruit a player with versatility. In addition to his ability to line up where needed, Tuimoloau is equally strong in defending against both the run and passing game.
Although Tuimoloau’s been criticized for a lack of explosive speed, he is a strong and consistent tackle who would be a great complement to Aidan Hutchinson. That pairing would be even sweeter if the Lions re-sign pro defensive end Za’Darius Smith . These three defenders would make a fearsome trio that could put the Lions defense in the books as one of the best in the NFL.
