Notes: Lions owner Sheila Hamp named Michiganian of the Year

Detroit Lions principal owner Sheila Hamp has been integral in the turnaround of the franchise since 2021. Now the Detroit News have given her a high honor.

For so long, the Detroit Lions franchise was an organization that wanted to be great. The will was there. As longtime owners of the team dating back to 1963, the Ford family knew the city of Detroit was dying to be a winner. Sure, Detroit is affectionately known as Hockeytown, but man, if the Lions ever figured it out—how quickly this town would become a football-obsessed area.

Thanks to an overhauling of the organization that took place in 2021, Lions principal owner Sheila Hamp has been at the forefront of turning this thing around. She is a competitor by nature, and what really drives her is bringing a championship and consistent winner to this city.

This week, Hamp was named by the Detroit News as one of the 10 “Michiganians of the Year.

Daniel Howes wrote about Hamp’s ‘Noble cause’ and how Hamp has cultivated an egoless culture in the Motor City.

“I think of myself as a steward of the Lions,” said Hamp of her role in the organization. “The team belongs to the city of Detroit, and Detroit is a football town, for sure. If we could actually put together a winning organization for our fans, for the city, it would really be something. And you know, that’s turned out to be the case.”

You can read the entirety of the story from Howes here .

And now, onto the rest of today’s notes:

  • While the Detroit Tigers ’ results on the field have been mixed, this is top—tier trolling of a certain AFC quarterback that at one time mulled over a career in politics.

  • After an offseason in which several cornerstones were locked in for the future, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press sees Lions’ defensive tackle Alim McNeill as the next in-line for a big extension.

  • PFF ranked the top-10 offensive tackles in the NFL . To put it simply, I strongly disagree with their first three rankings.

Tristan Wirfs or Penei Sewell?

  • June 8 was National Best Friends Day, so be sure to let your best friends know that you care about them the way wide receiver Kalif Raymond cares about fellow receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
