Lions’ running back David Montgomery finished up his college degree at Iowa State University.
A lot of people have goals of going back to finish school once the enter the NFL Draft . Naturally, life gets busy for players once their professional careers begin, so sometimes those plans to finish their education falls to the backburner.
For Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery, nobody would blame him if he waited until his playing days were over to finish up his degree at Iowa State . Instead, after six successful seasons as a pro, the former Cyclone accomplished his goal. Mike Green of the Forever True ISU blog has the story on Montgomery’s latest success.
“Getting my Iowa State degree was the most important thing I had on my list,” Montgomery said at the Iowa State student-athlete graduation luncheon. “I set a goal I wanted to finish this in the next couple of years, so being able to do that was very important. This was a priority for me. When I got a full-ride scholarship I made a promise to ensure myself to finish. Full-ride scholarships aren’t easy to come by, and I wanted to make sure I was exhausting every opportunity to ensure I would graduate.”
Montgomery will be 28 when the 2025 season gets underway, which, as crazy as it sounds—is older for an NFL back. Luckily for him, he has the chance to play for something special in Detroit.
“Going to the Lions was something I didn’t think I was going to experience in my NFL career,” Montgomery said. “They were a team that saw something in me. We have such a great group overall and we are ready to take the next step. We are excited for the upcoming season.”

And now, onto the rest of today’s notes:
- Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press was in attendance for Lions general manager Brad Holmes’ commencement speech at North Carolina A&T.
Brad Holmes gave the commencement speech at North Carolina A&T last week. I went to watch him deliver it. What I got was a deep sense of what A&T means to him and him to A&T. My Sunday long read on the Lions GM and the university that shaped him https://t.co/lWtC0pjYLc

- PFF ran a re-draft of the 2007 class and even though I love Joe Thomas, absolutely not.

- Eric Woodyard of ESPN wrote about why Lions’ rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa was destined to play in Detroit.
Here’s why donning Honolulu blue is a dream come true for #Lions draft pick Isaac TeSlaa. The Hudsonville, Mich., native grew up a lifelong fan.
The rookie “was born to be a Lion,” according to assistant GM Ray Agnew.
