ESPN’s Eric Woodyard takes readers through a timeline of Lions quarterback Jared Goff’s revival in Detroit.
I still remember where I was and many other details from the moment when I first heard the news. For essentially an entire night and the next morning, the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams had the attention of the entire football world.
The Lions, who were in complete rebuild mode with the arrival of new general manager Brad Holmes, had made the decision to trade quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Rams for Jared Goff and three draft picks. I am sure many fans felt gutted at the time, and understandably so. At the same time, this roster was in a really bad place after the years prior to Campbell and Holmes getting to town, so the move almost felt necessary.
Many people, including myself, viewed Goff as someone who could hopefully serve as a bridge quarterback. However, Goff didn’t see it that way, and his redemption arc since 2021 has been one of the more impressive things I have ever witnessed as a fan of this game. Eric Woodyard of ESPN broke down Goff’s Detroit renaissance for us, from stepping off the plane fresh from California, to inking his extension this past offseason.
“I saw this as an opportunity for me to build my own legacy, and being at the ground floor of something special — and something that we can hopefully build to [be] even more special than right now,” Goff said this past January.
