On Tuesday, the NFL announced the awarding of 35 compensatory picks for the 2025 NFL Draft . The Detroit Lions were the recipient of one—the last third-round pick. Now that the compensatory picks have been given out, the 2025 NFL Draft order for all seven rounds has been set.
While that order is likely to change based on agreed upon trades and trades that will happen between now and the draft, the Lions’ draft picks are currently set. Here’s an overall look at the selections the Lions currently have.
How many draft picks do the Lions have in 2025?
They are currently slated for seven overall selections in the 2025 NFL Draft. Four of those picks are their original draft selections, three were acquired either via trade or via compensatory picks.

What happened to the Lions’ other original picks?
- The Lions sent their 2025 third-round pick (92 overall) to the New York Jets for a 2024 fourth-round pick, which they used to select Giovanni Manu.
- Their original fifth-round pick (164 overall) was sent to the Cleveland Browns as part of the trade for Za’Darius Smith.
- Their original sixth-round pick (204 overall) was also sent to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for WR Donovan Peoples-Jones.
How did the Lions gain their additional 2025 picks?
- The Lions’ third-round compensatory pick was awarded because of the Rooney Rule. According to the rule, any team that loses a minority coach to a NFL head coaching job will receive a compensatory pick in back-to-back years. This year, the Lions lost defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who became the Jets head coach. Detroit will also get a third-round compensatory pick in 2026.
