Lions Week 2 OTA injury report: Updates on Brian Branch, others

Who practiced for the Detroit Lions at Week 2 of OTAs? We break it down with an update injury/participation report.

The Detroit Lions took the field Thursday afternoon for their fifth session of Organized Team Activities—the second of which was open to the media.

Like last week’s practice, there was a large portion of players missing from practice . I’ll break down the players I did and didn’t see out there playing, and provide additional commentary when necessary.

This week, I’ve also bolded players whose participation level has changed from last week’s practice.

As always, it’s important to note that these practices are voluntary, so absences may not be injury related—and there is no official injury report to consult, so these are purely based on my observations.

Did not spot at practice

WR Antoine Green — downgrade after full participation
OT Taylor Decker
G Kevin Zeitler — downgrade after full participation
G Christian Mahogany — downgrade after full participation
G Kayode Awosika
C Frank Ragnow
EDGE Marcus Davenport
DT Kyle Peko — downgrade after full participation
DT DJ Reader
LB Alex Anzalone
CB Emmanuel Moseley — downgrade after doing walkthroughs last week
CB Carlton Davis — downgrade after full participation
CB Craig James — downgrade after full participation

Last week, Antoine Green was getting some reps with the first team. This week, I didn’t spot him. He was replaced by Donovan Peoples-Jones and Kalif Raymond—both of whom got first-team reps.

The Lions offensive line was quite shorthanded, missing three of their starters. As a result, the most common lineup amongst the starters was—from left to right—Dan Skipper, Graham Glasgow, Michael Niese, Colby Sorsdal, and Penei Sewell.

The secondary was equally beat up, with Carlton Davis being a surprise absence. The starters for the entirety of practice were Terrion Arnold and Kindle Vildor with Amik Robertson manning the nickel.

Spotted at practice, but doing nothing

  • RB Jahmyr Gibbs
  • DB Brian Branch

It wasn’t clear what (if anything) was preventing Gibbs from being out there, but he didn’t practice last week either. As for Branch, there was one small sign of progress: the scooter appears to be gone. Branch still had a big boot on his foot, but he was walking around on both feet during downtime in practice.

At practice, but only working with trainers

  • EDGE James Houston — Upgraded after missing last week
  • S Kerby Joseph

Houston was moving around pretty intensely with a trainer during the first half of practice, while Joseph was taking it a little more easy.

Limited

  • LB Derrick Barnes
  • CB Ennis Rakestraw

I did not see Rakestraw in on any team drills, which is where he was at last week. Same situation with Barnes.

No limitations from people who were absent/limited last week

  • RB Zonovan Knight — No visible limitations after limited last week
  • TE Sam LaPorta — Upgraded after missing last week
  • CB Terrion Arnold — No visible limitations after limited last week

Knight did team drills on Thursday after being limited last week. Both Sam LaPorta and Terrion Arnold were starters and participants for the entirety of practice.
