The Lions released QB Jake Fromm as they head into the NFL Draft.
The Detroit Lions announced that they have released quarterback Jake Fromm one day ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft . With this move, the Lions roster now sits at 73 players heading into the big event.
Originally drafted in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Bills, Fromm bounced between the Bills, Giants and Commanders over his first four years in the NFL before landing in Detroit last training camp. Despite being a mid-camp addition, Fromm found his way but was never elevated to the active roster.
Fromm signed a Futures contract with the Lions in January, but after the addition of Kyle Allen in free agency, the Lions apparently felt comfortable with Allen and Hendon Hooker backing up starter Jared Goff.
While the timing of this release does seem a bit unusual, it’s worth noting that, under the Braqd Holmes-Dan Campbell regime, the Lions’ roster is larger than it has ever been at this point in the offseason. Typically, the Lions enter draft week with 20-25 available spots on their roster, but this year, they currently only have 17 openings. With seven draft picks in hand, the Lions may only be able to sign 10 undrafted rookie, which would be the smallest UDFA class in quite some time.
With only three quarterbacks on the current roster, it’s possible the Lions draft or sign a UDFA rookie quarterback over the weekend, in order to have a younger camp arm that could compete for a reserve role.
